CHILDREN are viewing graphic pornography, including acts of bestiality, on their mobile phones and parents appear powerless to stop them without banning their phones completely.

A concerned southern Tasmanian grandmother has contacted The Mercury after her 12-year-old grandson received pornographic videos from a high school student.

The primary school student was sent more than 30 explicit videos including a sex act between a woman and a draughthorse.

“There were women with animals, there were females together, males and females, images of women’s vaginas. It was triple X-rated,” she said.

“I think it’s degrading to women and it’s teaching young people that sex is dirty. Parents need to be alerted to the dangers.”

The videos were sent to the boy’s phone using bluetooth technology outside school hours.

The grandmother contacted the relevant schools’ principals.

Tasmanian State Schools Parents and Friends president Jenny Branch said she was aware of the problem, but could not see an immediate solution.

“I have no idea how you can stop this from happening,” Ms Branch said.

“There is a whole range of things out there that children are getting exposed to that weren’t around when we were children so it is important to educate them about what’s appropriate and what’s not.

“My husband gets stuff all the time. He can make a choice about what to do with it, but it’s very hard for children to make those sorts of choices.”

The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, which represents mobile phone companies, warned that people who sent pornographic material could face legal consequences.

Communications manager Randal Markey said that under the Crimes Act it was an offence to use a mobile phone to menace, harass or offend another person.

“I can’t comment on this particular case, but certainly sending material of a pornographic nature would be offensive,” Mr Markey said.

“This can all get checked and traced so people who think they can do this anonymously are really quite wrong.

“Parents should consider what their child could have access to before choosing to buy them an internet-enabled phone.”

The grandmother said her grandson had suffered post-traumatic stress syndrome after watching the videos.

“I told him it’s not normal,” she said. “I’m no prude, but it was sick.

“Counsellors will tell you you are denying them the right to communication if you don’t let them have a phone, but I wish I’d never let him get it.”

“…The grandmother said her grandson had suffered post-traumatic stress syndrome after watching the videos…”

Understandable! As an Aussie, it’s hard to believe that there are any slim girls in the world.
